    THE BEAUTY OF COLOURED STONES

    By admin | Summit Diamonds | Comments are Closed | 26 May, 2015 | 0

Coloured Gemstones, or “precious stones” can be incredibly striking and beautiful. They exist in many different shapes, sizes and colours, which can become quite confusing for a potential buyer.  In the past, they have been closely associated with the date and month of birth, but nowadays, most people wear them just for their beauty.

Few of us know the real significance of these magnificent stones in our lives, and why they are considered precious in the first place. Is it because of their beauty or power? It is well known that precious gems are minerals of the earth that are mined, carved and polished to make them beautiful for setting in jewellery.

Diamonds are a polymorph of carbon and are commonly found in South Africa.  Emeralds (green), are made of  Beryllium Al Silicate and are mined in Columbian.  Sapphires, or the “destiny gems,”  are made of Aluminum Oxide, and are widely found in Sri-Lanka, Cambodia and Thailand.

Although all gemstones are considered to be precious,  they are commonly classified according to their availability. Rare gems are therefore the most expensive. It is believed that pure gems have a powerful effect on the body, but they are challenging to find these days.

It is interesting to note that although diamonds are considered the most precious stones available, sapphires, rubies, and emeralds are actually far rarer than diamonds.

Rubies are made from the mineral Corundum, which comes from Aluminum Oxide.  It is basically a red sapphire, called the “tears of Buddha”.  Rubies are a symbol of power and freedom, usually found in Thailand, Myanmar and Cambodia.

Gemstones are divided into the following categories:
Precious Stones –  Diamonds, Rubies, Sapphires and Emeralds
Semi-precious Stones – Aquamarine, Jade, Opals, Topaz etc.
Organic Stones –  Amber, Coral and Pearls.

Some precious gems are extremely rare. Peridot, a type Olivine (a mineral found in a meteorite), is the rarest gem that exists.  A Peridot is green in colour and considered to be a very powerful stone.

Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but precious coloured gemstones are becoming more and more popular.
