Are You Thinking of Buying a Diamond?

Buying a diamond engagement ring is one of the most unforgettable moments in your life. You have fallen in love with the loved one of your dreams and are about to propose, so here are some tips to help you select the perfect ring for your loved one.

    1. Set a Budget.

Decide how much you want to spend, and Razi will work with you to find a diamond and setting that fits right within your budget.

    2. The More You Understand About Diamonds, The Better.

What are the 4 C’s? Colour, Clarity, Cut and Carat Weight.

Each of these influences the value of a diamond as well as it’s overall appearance. When you understand them, you will be able to decide on what is most vital for you and what you are prepared to compromise on to fit your budget. Remember, every diamond is unique.

    3. Know What Your Loved One Likes.

Figure out what kind of jewellery your loved one likes by taking notice of what style they wear. For example, do they like white or yellow gold, modern or classic design, do they wear chunky or sleek pieces and is their taste simple or ornate? By knowing the answers to these question, you will be well informed to make a perfect choice.

    4. Do You Know Their Ring Size?

When it comes to this, you will need to be a little sneaky. You can borrow one of the rings they wear, or  you can trace the inside of the ring onto a piece of paper. You can even push the ring into a bar of soap. Razi will be able to use any of the above to figure out their ring size.

    5. Determine The Stone Shape And Cut Your Loved One Prefers.

Remember that they will be wearing this ring for the rest of their life and for that reason, they should be able to wear it with anything from casual to dressing up. Keep an ear open in case they drop some clues about the shape and cut of a friend’s stone. If you have no idea from them, here are some things to consider when it comes to the shape of the stone you pick:

The classic choices are a round or square shape and usually appeal to most people. Round and oval shapes work well together in multi-stone rings while pear and heart shapes can be a bit more challenging. If they like clean and modern lines in other choices, they will probably love a rectangle or square stone. A more traditional person will feel comfortable with a round shape, and if they are more bohemian and eclectic in their tastes, an unusual shape like a marquise or triangular diamond will probably hit the spot.

The cutting style is also a consideration; for example, round stones are usually cut in the brilliant style (57/58 facets) that maximize the sparkle and minimize the appearance of inclusions in the diamond. If you choose a cutting style like an emerald cut which has fewer facets, the inclusions will be more visible, which means that the diamond you pick will need to have higher clarity.

    6. How To Pick A Setting.

There are many choices when it comes to settings, and again, it will be helpful if you consider the following things:

Is they are an active and outdoorsy person? Then a lower profile setting that is simple and has secure mountings for the stone is probably best as it will be less likely to catch on things.

Is they are more of a glamour person? Then a “statement” setting that is more intricate and has a higher stone profile will most likely be a good fit.

Some of the basic settings you may be familiar with are:

    Solitaire

The solitaire setting with a single diamond remains the most popular style for engagement rings. A prong setting (six prongs is better than four), catches the most light and is more secure. If you want the stone to be safe, you can set it in a bezel setting which protects the girdle of the stone but understand that the diamond will be less sparkly in this setting as it catches less light.

    Side Stone

This setting has a stone in the middle with smaller diamonds or other gemstones flanking it on either side. The two most common side stone settings are prong-channel (protects the stones by keeping them flush) and a bar-channel (allows more light to enter the side stones).

    Three Stone

This setting usually has a larger stone in the centre with two slightly smaller side stones.

    Halo

This setting is becoming popular with the centre stone surrounded by tiny stones; usually, diamonds called pave (pah-vey). The pave setting adds sparkle and makes the centre stone appear more substantial.

    7. Last But Not Least Pick A Metal

Because your diamond engagement ring is meant to last for a lifetime, it is usually made from gold or platinum. Some people prefer white gold to yellow or rose gold, but sometimes the metal you pick is one that will make your chosen diamond look it’s best. This is a very personal decision, and it would help to know what colour jewellery your future bride prefers to wear before you make the decision.
