Did you know that birthstones are gems associated with the month a person is born?
We have all heard “diamonds are forever” or “diamonds are a girl’s best friend”. But did you know that if you were born in April, then a diamond is your birthstone? Diamond jewellery has become a status symbol.
Birthstones date back to biblical days when the high priests used to wear breastplates. The breastplate was inlaid with 12 gemstones, including a diamond, a sapphire, topaz, onyx and others. Later, in the 5th century, two roman scholars associated the 12 breastplate gems with the zodiac. In the 18th century, gem traders marketed each stone based on a person’s birth month. Finally, in 1912, the National Association of Jewelers solidified the practice in the US.
Many of you probably own a diamond. Diamonds are an extremely rare gemstone and, for sure, one of the most prized. Most people are primarily interested in the pure colourless variety of diamonds. These colourless diamonds are extremely rare. By the way, did you know that diamonds are 58 times harder than any other mineral on earth?
Today, you will see diamonds set in engagement rings, cocktail rings, earrings, anniversary rings, birthstone rings, and eternity rings, to name a few. Birthstones are thought to bring good luck, good health, and protection. For example, in Hindu mythology, the word for diamond used by some religious people (in Sanskrit) is vajra, which was also the weapon of Indra, the king of gods.
